Baseline soil health

Flagship Climate Action work.

Independent soil-health cards were prepared for farms in the project cluster to establish a baseline the biochar programme is designed to improve. Average soil organic carbon sits at 0.69% - well below the ~1.5% target - which is precisely the gap biochar and organic practice are meant to close; soil pH averages a near-neutral 7.0, ideal for cotton.

The dominant soil types are black cotton, loamy sand and sandy loam. As biochar application and organic practice continue, these cards give a measurable before-and-after baseline for soil organic carbon and water-holding capacity across the cluster.
